Australia Bucket List: 10 Epic Experiences You Must Have
Even though Australia is pretty far from everywhere else, it’s definitely worth the long flight. In spite of its remoteness, its impeccable variety of wildlife and breathtaking nature make it worthwhile. That’s why there are plenty of adventurous experiences there enough to compile an epic Australia bucket list.
10 Things to Add to Your Australia Bucket List
#1 Hop over to Kangaroo island
Just like the name suggests, this is where you can spot Australia’s famed wild animal, the kangaroo! However, the island is actually well known for its diversity of wildlife, ranging from koalas to various bird species, and not just kangaroos. The country’s third-largest island is just off the coast of South Australia.
#2 Swim with Australian sea lions
When you go to Kangaroo Island, sea lions are a must-see there! This kind of “ocean safari” is an incredible experience to have that must top your Australia bucket list. The sea lions can be quite friendly and playful, so don’t worry!
#3 Take a Quokka selfie
Speaking of wildlife, don’t forget to take the Instagram-famous quokka selfie. Kangaroos are cool and all, but the quokkas are the new Australia-favorite animal. The always-smiling animal is one of the cutest little creatures on the planet that’ll probably approach you on its own. Where to find these cute munchkins? On Rottnest island!
#4 Visit the 12 Apostles
This is hands down one of the most iconic attractions to visit there. Alongside Australia’s Great Ocean Road, you can find 12 limestone pillars rising from the ocean. These were once part of the mainland cliffs, but as a result of erosion of wind and water, the ocean got this extra scenic view as an addition.
#5 Dive or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef
If you’re a diver, then diving the Great Barrier Reef shouldn’t just be on your Australia bucket list, but on your entire life’s bucket list! The world’s largest coral reef system is one of the seven wonders of the natural world. So, even if you’re not a driving enthusiast or a mermaid in disguise, you just can’t miss it.
#6 Enjoy the view at Sydney Opera House
The 20th-century building is considered an architectural masterpiece, and as it sits on the banks of Sydney Harbour, it’s surely a beautiful view to marvel at. And if you appreciate performance art, then just stopping by to admire the view isn’t enough – you need to pay the venue a proper visit.
#7 Visit Hobbiton village in New Zealand
If you grew up watching Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, then this experience is a must, and if you’re already visiting this part of the world, then making a stop in New Zealand makes sense.
#8 Explore Uluru by Foot
Are you an avid hiker? Then you should add Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to your Australia bucket list, especially its most iconic Uluru. Also known as Ayers Rock, Uluru is an ancient sandstone formation that has a very special history as well as a sacred value. Climbing and hiking the monolith was banned a few years ago; however, there’s still plenty of hiking you can do around the national park.
#9 View the Aurora in Tasmania
If you think you can witness this natural spectacle in the northern hemisphere only, then you’re absolutely wrong. You can also see the Aurora Australis from Tasmania! Unlike the Aurora Borealis, you can technically see the Aurora in the southern hemisphere all year round. However, the winter months are the best months to see it.
#10 Soak in the Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown
When in New Zealand, it’s also worth it to stop by the Onsen Hot Pools in Queenstown. There, you can enjoy a lush spa-like experience as you enjoy the outdoor cedar tubs, offering marvellous panoramic views across the Shotover River.
